Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says Reiss Nelson has ‘something special’ after dropping a heavy hint that the midfielder is set for his first appearance of the season against Bodo-Glimt.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at Feyenoord but he returned to the Emirates in the summer transfer window, with the Gunners rejecting a number of advances for him.

Despite the talk around Nelson as a teenager, he’s made just 48 appearances for the Gunners and he’s yet to feature this term.

Nelson sustained an injury in August that has hindered his chances but he made the bench for Saturday’s 3-1 win against rivals Tottenham.

Given the good form of those in front of him, it’s going to be difficult for Nelson to break into the side but the Europa League represents a better chance for him to stake his claim.

And Arteta has suggested he will start tomorrow night, after claiming there is something ‘special’ in Nelson.

‘After the spell that he had last year on loan, we wanted him back to see if there are any changes and there’s a prospect that we can really take to the next level,’ Arteta said.

We think the potential is there and we think we’ve seen something in Reiss that is special. He’s been a part of our academy system and now he’s going to have an opportunity.

‘He’s been out for almost three months with an injury, he’s back now, he’s fully fit and he’s ready to play. He just needs minutes now.’
