says he is glad that the saga between and is now over.
On Tuesday evening, United confirmed that they had terminated Ronaldo’s contract with immediate effect, following his explosive interview with where he slammed the club, it’s owners, manager Erik ten Hag and some of his current and former teammates.
It is no secret that Ronaldo was desperate to leave Old Trafford and many believe that the interview was done in order to force United to let him go – a wish that has now been granted.
Speaking on the BBC after their coverage of Mexico’s goalless draw with Poland at the World Cup, United legend Ferdinand, a former teammate of Ronaldo, gave his instant reaction to the news.
‘I think both parties will be delighted now,’ the former defender said.
‘He has obviously done that with the mindset that he wanted to get out of the football club and wasn’t happy. He made that very clear.
‘I also think that Ten Hag has got what he wanted in this situation. Both parties are happy. Move on and it’s the next chapter for Ronaldo.’
As for where Ronaldo will play next, boyhood club Sporting Lisbon and Chelsea remain the bookies favourites.
‘Depends what the motivation is,’ Ferdinand added.
‘Is it Champions League? Is it money? Is it just to continue laying somewhere with a nice climate?
‘I think this will be planned out behind the scenes but I’m sure we’ll find out in due course.’
