Peter Schmeichel fears ’s days at are numbered after the January loan signing was hauled off at half-time in last night’s dramatic win over Barcelona.

The Dutch international joined on-loan last month following the departure of , with the Glazer family unwilling to sanction a move for a big-money replacement.

Erik ten Hag is hoping to recruit a new striker in the summer with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and RB Salzburg’s Benjamin Sesko firmly on his radar.

Weghorst has started every game since his arrival from Burnley via Beskitas, and although he has performed a valuable tactical role in Ten Hag’s system he has done little to suggest he is more than a short-term solution.

The 30-year-old has scored just one goal in 11 appearances so far and as Ten Hag’s side came from behind to secure a place in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Overall, United’s recruitment strategy since Ten Hag’s appointment has been a success with the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro already establishing themselves as mainstays in an ever improving side.

United legend Schmeichel, however, believes the addition of Weghorst represents something of an outlier and can’t envisage a long-term future at Old Trafford for the experienced forward.

He said: ‘The way EtH and his team have recruited has been very good – [but] it’s not been fantastic – there are question marks over certain players.

Wout Weghorst has arrived on loan. You can argue that’s what was available at the time but I’m thinking is there not someone younger at the club you could have given that opportunity?

‘Wouldn’t that have been more beneficial for the club? They’ve brought in a striker who has played every game since he has arrived and scored one goal. It wasn’t even a deciding goal. Of course we are right to question that decision.

‘We haven’t spoken about Wout Weghorst tonight and he is a bit of the odd one out for me.

‘He has started every game and we are still waiting to see if he is good enough for this Manchester United side and I don’t think he is.’
