It is little surprise which former star is the idol of Lisandro Martinez, with the current Red Devils defender declaring his love for Gabriel Heinze.
Martinez arrived at Old Trafford from over the summer and, despite a difficult first couple of games, has quickly become a fan favourite and won over pundits who were questioning his ability to play centre-back in the Premier League at 5’9″.
The 24-year-old is a firm favourite of manager Erik ten Hag, who was also his boss at Ajax, and has forged an impressive partnership in the middle of defence with .
His tenacity and aggression has impressed the United faithful, and may well remind them of another Argentinian they cheered on in the past.
Heinze was only a United player from 2004-07 but it was a memorable stint in England for the left-back, who won the Premier League in 2007 and won the fans’ player of the season award at Old Trafford in 2004-05.
He certainly made an impression on Martinez, who has modelled his game on Heinze’s to an extent.
‘Gabriel Heinze is my idol. I love him,’ Martinez told . ‘I love the way he played, very aggressive, good mentality, good mentality in the duels. Every game as a final. He was a top player.
“I try to play like him. We are a bit different as well, but I like his mentality.
Martinez summed up the attitude he shares with Heinze nicely by saying: ‘Football is always physical. You have to train always hard. You have to be ready. I always try to give 100 per cent.’
