Former Arsenal captain Gilberto Silva is convinced Gabriel Martinelli will sign a new contract with the Gunners.

Martinelli has enjoyed a sublime start to the 2022-23 season and is currently in talks with the club over extending his current deal which expires in the summer of 2024.

The Brazilian forward is reportedly looking for a deal that will see him earn in the region of £200,000-per-week, terms that would significantly increase his current pay packet and put him among the club’s current top earners.

and have both been credited with interest in the 21-year-old, who has scored four times and provided two assists this season.

Arsenal are enjoying their best ever start to a league season with the emergence of their current crop of youngsters sparking a run of form that is seeing the club considered genuine title contenders.

Their last title charge, almost a decade ago, was undermined when the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Samir Nasri all departed the club within 12 months. Other stars of previous Arsenal sides also left the club under Arsene Wenger over the years only to enjoy less success on the pitch after leaving north London.

But former Gunners captain Gilberto, who spent six years in the capital, believes the likes of Martinelli will repay the faith shown to him by Mikel Arteta and the club.

‘Being at the club the last couple of years, he [Martinelli] understands how important it is to be at the club, how important the club is for his career and his progress where everyone has been patient with him and helping him to grow up,’ Gilberto on behalf of .

‘And I hope he is very clear about this. Arsenal is a great club for young players. When I was there, I have seen players when they reach a certain level at the club and the opportunity for them to stay longer comes, they decide to leave and their career was not the same afterwards. If you go back to the past you see this with a list of players.

‘But I think for him now, he has got the support of the manager. He is playing in a very good team, he is at a fantastic club.  I think Arsenal will not face a challenge [in keeping him].

‘Of course it will not be easy especially when people start to talk about clubs wanting to take him at this stage, but I think Arsenal will be convinced they can keep him, I’m sure they will.’

Martinelli joined Arsenal in 2019, largely thanks to the work of technical director Edu, a former teammate of Gilberto’s. Arsenal have since utilised that Brazilian pipeline in bringing in another youngster in Marquinhos, who joined the club from Sao Paulo on a long-term deal in the summer.

Arsenal are among the sides credited with interest in 16-year-old Palmeiras sensation Endrick, regarded as the most exciting talent to emerge from Brazil since Neymar.

The forward, who made his senior debut earlier this month, cannot join a European club until his 18th birthday with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Manchester United also on the long list of clubs tracking his progress.

With Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Magalhaes also part of the Brazilian contingent at the Emirates, Gilberto believes Edu’s connections will serve Arsenal well in trying to tempt Endrick to the red half of north London.

‘We know the importance in football of being well connected, to people, clubs, sporting directors, presidents of the club,’ Gilberto said. ‘This is how things happen.

‘But there is big competition to get the best players, from the best leagues. For Palmeiras, they are going to receive a lot of calls from many clubs, the best clubs in the world to try and bring him to them.

‘It is a tough time for the player, honestly. Sometimes they are loads of messages, loads of opportunities, and it can be very difficult to make decisions. It is important for the people around him to give him the right advice together with the family, to let them make the right decision.

‘Let’s see, if some point Arsenal did manage to bring the player, they will be getting a very good player.’
