Former Arsenal defender Mikael Silvestre says Gabriel Jesus should be aiming to score a minimum of 20 Premier League goals this season.

The Brazil international made his competitive debut for his new club in the Premier League opener against on Friday evening, having joined from for around £45m from Manchester City earlier this summer.

Jesus impressed in the 2-0 victory over Patrick Vieira’s Eagles, but it was compatriot Gabriel Martinelli who opened the scoring for Mikel Arteta’s men, before an own goal from Palace defender Marc Guehi sealed the points.

For Silvestre, who won ten major trophies with before a trophyless two seasons with Arsenal, Jesus should be aiming for a significant haul of goals this campaign.

‘I think he should score in the 20s,’ Silvestre told . ’20 goals should be his mark this season, minimum. It’s an interesting one because it depends [how he is asked to play]. A lot of the time he is outside of the box, drifting left and right. A lot of time on the right, but he ends up scoring a lot of goals in the box.’

‘I think that’s what needed with the [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang situation, and -Alexandre] Lacazette leaving as well. It’s an excellent signing.’

Jesus and Martinelli demonstrated a strong early understanding in key moments at Selhurst Park, and Silvestre believes the youngster’s performances will have an influence on Martinelli’s goalscoring.

‘His energy and the dynamic with [Gabriel] Martinelli with them speaking the same language,’ Silvestre said. ‘He’s going to have a big impact if he stays fit because he’s also someone who doesn’t shy away from challenges. Sometimes, you feel like he’s on the edge and certainly gives 100% all the time.’

The Gunners’ season continues with a match against Leicester City on Saturday afternoon at Emirates Stadium.
