Brentford striker Ivan Toney is under investigation by the Association over allegations he gambled on football during his career.

The 26-year-old, who is hoping to be part of England’s squad this month, has been at the centre of an investigation which has been ongoing for several months.

Toney, who has scored eight Premier League goals for Brentford this season, was in England’s last squad during the September international break but did not make an appearance for Gareth Southgate’s side.

According to , Toney is alleged to have gambled while he was playing in the lower divisions and before he joined Brentford in 2020.

There is no suggestion of any criminal activity by Toney, or that he attempted to fix the outcome of a match.

But FA rules prevent all professional players from betting on football during their career.

On Saturday, Toney released a statement saying: ‘I’m aware of a story about me in a national newspaper today.

‘I have been assisting the Football Association with their enquiries and will not be making any comment until such investigation has reached its conclusion.

‘I am a proud Englishman and it has always been my childhood dream to play for my country at a World Cup Finals.’

Meanwhile, a source told : ‘Ivan is aware of the investigation. He is concerned but is adamant that he has done nothing wrong.

‘The FA is duty-bound to act fully on allegations they receive. But it is obviously a highly sensitive matter for the FA as he is a potential candidate for the England World Cup squad.’
